It was my friend Chirag’s marriage, so he insisted me to go to Ahmedabad with him and attend his marriage. I hadn’t taken any vacation since I joined the company. This was a “Get out card” for me. Without any counter-questions, I said yes. I never knew that I will be introduced to the
Food and Snacks of Gujarat in this trip.
My friend Chirag is a the most respected person in our company. With his smile and his dedication towards his work, he had won many people’s hearts. After keeping his marital status on “Single” for nearly 5 years, now he was ready to tie the knot. It was the first time, I heard about the term “Arranged Marriage.”
We were standing at the J. F. Kennedy International Airport and my curious mind pushed me to ask Chirag the question. “What is arranged marriage?” He smiled at me and answered “In arranged marriage your parents choose the person for you to marry.” I asked curiously “And you simply marry them without getting to know them?” He answered “Yes.” I didn’t ask him further.

We reached Ahmedabad three days before Chirag’s wedding. It was necessary as per the Indian tradition. But, that was not my concern. My concern was jet lag. Traveling from New York to Ahmedabad was like traveling to the Future; however, here the future was just 24 hours apart from us. But, those 24 hours damaged my digestion system. I made many trips to the loo and at the end of the day I was feeling really hungry.
I was kind of a shy person. Even I was hungry, I was shy to ask someone to get me some food. I controlled myself till midnight and then my face started to express what is going on in my stomach. Chirag noticed that and asked me “Dude, what happed?” I answered, “I am hungry.” He asked me back “Why didn’t you ask for food?” I didn’t answer anything. Chirag grabbed my hand and said, “Let’s get you some food.” I replied, “It’s midnight, man. Where will we find food?” He smiled at me and answered “I know a place.” I did not argue with him.
He took me to a place know as “Manek-Chowk”. I was quite surprised by the crowd. I looked around and the place had every type of food and snacks of Gujarat. I did not know the name of the dishes they were selling there; however, they looked delicious to me.
Chirag took me to a “thela”, where the guy was selling a yellow curly things with chutney. I asked Chirag the dish’ name. He told me that it is called “Gathia.” He bought some for me. I had seen Gathias first time in my life, so I was somehow nervous to eat that. Then I took the step, which I never regretted in my life again. I took a Gathia, dipped it into the chutney and ate it. As soon as it touched my tongue, I became an admirer of food and snacks of Gujarat. After eating food from McDonalds, KFC and Subway for many years, I ate something new and delicious.
After that day, the Gujarati food never stayed away from me, as my friend Chirag’s wife always invited me to Dinner to eat the great Gujarati Thali with them.
